The United States Virgin Islands were formerly known as the Danish West Indies were originally settled by the Ciboney, Carib and Arawak peoples. Christopher Columbus named the Islands on his second voyage in 1493 in honour of Saint Ursula and her virgin followers. Over the next three hundred years, control of the Islands would pass through the hands of the Spanish, British, Dutch, French and the Danes - Norweigans. The Danish West Indies Company gained control in 1672 and would hold the islands on behalf of the Danish Monarch until their sale to the United States on March 31, 1917. The flag of the United States Virgin Islands was adopted in 1922. It consists of a simplified version of the Great Seal of the United States between the letters V and I signifying the Virgin Islands The eagle holds a laurel branch in one talon, and three arrows in the other. Each arrow represents one of the three major islands: Saint Thomas, Saint John and Saint Croix. The flag’s colours represent various characteristics of the Virgin Island’s landscape: yellow, representing various the flowers and the beauty of the islands; green, symbolizing the hills; white, depicting the clouds; and blue, reflecting the surrounding waters.
