Imperial Standard of the Japanese Emperor Flag SKU: ISJ35P
As early as 1869, flags were created for the Japan’s Emperor, the Empress (his wife) and for other members of the imperial family. At first, the Emperor's flag was ornate, with a sun resting in the center of an artistic pattern. The Emperor and his family members were each granted separate flags for use on land, at sea and use on foot or on their carriages. The carriage flags were mono-coloured with a 16-petal chrysanthemum in the center of the field. In 1889 when the Emperor decided to amend his standard to include chrysanthemum on a red field. With minor changes in the color shades and proportions, this design is still in use today by the Imperial family. The Imperial Seal of Japan known as Kiku no Gomon or the Imperial Seal of Chrysanthemum, is used exclusively by members of the Japanese Imperial family. The symbol is a yellow or orange chrysanthemum outlined in black or red. A central disc is surrounded by a two sets of 16 petals one in front and one in the back. The rear set petals are staggered in relation to the front set and are visible at the edges.
