The League of Arab States is a regional organization of Arab nations in Southwest Asia and North Africa. It was formed in Cairo on March 22, 1945 with six founding members: Eqyot, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Yemen joined as a member two months later on May 5th. The Arab League currently has 22 members The Arab League is involved in political, economic, cultural, and social programs designed to promote the interests of its member states. Its main goal is to draw the member states closer and co-ordinate collaboration between them, to safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of the Arab countries. The flag of the League of Arab States is a green field upon which rests a circle formed by a twenty-link chain. Each links represents the twenty-member stateswhich were members of the Arab League when the flag was adopted. Inside the circle is a crescent moon with upward pinting horns. Above the moon is the name of the organization in Arabic script. and a white inscription above it. Surrounding the circular chain is a white wreath and ribbon. Current membership includes: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
