World Organisation of Scouting Movements Flag SKU: WOS35P
The World Organisation of Scouting Movements or WOSM is an international, non-governmental organization composed of its recognized national Scout organizations. Its is governed by its World Conference, which meets every three years, and its executive is the World Committee composed of elected volunteers. There are more than 28 million Scouts, young people and adults, male and female, in 216 countries and territories worldwide. The World Organisation of Scouting Movements flag is a symbol of all member organizations in a similar manner as the United Nations flag represents all of its member nations. The flag is a basic design conceived by Lord Baden-Powell at the time he founded the Scouting movement. He was influenced by heraldry, whereby white symbolised purity and royal purple, leadership and assistance to others. The fleur de lys emblem had dual meaning. Firstly it was chosen as a recognised symbol of peace and purity. This was to counter early criticism of Scouting, which alleged that it was founded to turn boys in to soldiers. Baden-Powell’s true objective for choosing the fleur de lys was its recognition as the universal mapping and compass symbol for the direction North. He believed that "it points in the right direction (and upwards), turning neither to the right nor left, since these lead backward again..." The two stars on the flag allude to truth and knowledge, the two most important elements found in the creeds, promises and oaths of all member organizations. The stars also symbolise the outdoor attraction of Scouting.?The rope encircles the fleur-de-lis in the spirit of brotherhood between WOSM members. It is tied in the reef knot (square knot), symbolising the fact that if tied properly it is the most useful of knots reminding Scouts that this principle applies to their obligations to be of service to one another as well as useful. The World Organisation of Scouting flag is not the official flag of Scouts Canada, Boy Scouts of America nor any other nationals scouting association. It simply is a symbol of the world unity of all scouting organisations.
