Uganda Flag - Republic of SKU: UGA35P
The flag of the Republic of Uganda was adopted on October 9, 1962 upon independence from Great Britain. Mr. Grace Ibingira, who was the Minister of Justice in the new Ugandan government, conceived the flag in anticipation of independence. The Ugandan flag consists of six equal horizontal bands or stripes with black on top followed by yellow, red, black, yellow, and red. Super-imposed in the centre of the field is a white disc bearing a Red Crested Crane facing hoist. It is the national symbol of Uganda and commemorates the military badge of Royal Ugandan soldiers under British rule. The flag’s colours are those of the Uganda People’s Congress who ruled Uganda upon independence. Black is representative of the African people, yellow recognises Africa’s glorious sunshine and red is the colour of African brotherhood and the shed blood which connects them.
