Tanzania Flag - United Republic of SKU: TZA35P
On 26 April 1964, the nations of Tanganyika and Zanzibar combined to form the United Republic of Tanzania. They subsequently adopted a new flag on 29 October 1964. Like the new name, the new flag was an amalgamation of two flags with elements of each retained. The flag is divided diagonally by a yellow and black fimbriation from the lower hoist-side corner. The upper triangle (hoist side) is green and the lower triangle is blue. Each of the flag’s colours have a distinct interpretation. Green symbolises the nation’s green vegetation while gold represents its rich mineral deposits. Black is the colour of the native Swahili people and their sexual nature. Blue symbolises the country’s numerous rivers and lakes that feed into the Indian Ocean. Each colour and its interpretation is prescribed officially by the Planning and Privatisation department of the President’s Office.
