Swaziland Flag - Kingdom of SKU: SWZ35P
The Kingdom of Swaziland is a small, landlocked nation in southern Africa. It is surrounded on all sides except the east by South Africa, where it borders Mozambique. The ruling royal household first appeared in the region in the 18th century with the rule of Dlamini I. King Mswati I, for whom the kingdom was named suceeded Dlamini. Neighbouring South Africa through its then Transvaal State made claim over Swaziland in the 1890’s but was never able to enforce the claim. The hostilities of this claim together with events of the second Boer War resulted in Swaziland becoming a British protectorate. Full independence within the Commonwealth of Nations was granted on September 6, 1968.
The Kingdom of Swaziland’s flag was adopted one month after independence on October 6, 1968. It is based on a flag given by the late King Sobhuza II to the Swazi Pioneer Corps in 1941. The central focus of the flag is a shield and two spears, symbolizing protection from the country's enemies. The Emasotsha shield is laid horizontally and is reinforced by a staff from which injobo tassels are hung drawn from the feathers of the widowbird and the loury. The feathers also decorate the shield. Above the staff are two assegais ready for battle. The colour red stands for past battles, blue for peace and stability, and yellow for the resources of Swaziland. The intent of these colours is to show the black and white people of Swaziland living in peaceful coexistence.
