Solomon Islands Flag SKU: SLB35P
The Solomon Islands is a scattered archipelago of about 1,000 mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls. It lies east of Papua New Guinea and northeast of Australia in the south Pacific. The islands include Guadalcanal, Malaita, Santa Isabel, San Cristóbal, Choiseul, New Georgia, and the Santa Cruz group. Discovered by the Spanish, the islands have seen several European occupiers. Initially the Germans and later by Great Britain, the Islands were occupied by Japan before being returned to British Rule. The Islands were granted self rule in 1976 followed by full independence and membership in the Commonwealth of Nations in 1978. The Flag of the Solomon Islands was officially adopted on November 18th, 1977. The flag is divided into two right-angled triangles by a bold yellow stripe ascending diagonally from the hoist. The yellow stripe is symbolic of sunshine. The upper triangle is blue symbolising the surrounding ocean while the lower green triangle represents the lush green vegetation home to the islands. The five five-pointed stars set against the blue sea represent the archipelago-nation's five administrative units, surrounded by the Pacific.
