The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago nation consisting of 155 islands in the Indian Ocean. It is located 1,500 kilometres east of mainland Africa, to the northeast Madagascar. Seychelles has the smallest population of any sovereign African state.Upon independence from Great Britain in June of 1976, a new flag was adopted based on the St Andrews Cross. The flag bore a white cross with blue triangles above and below, and red to the left and right. When a coup d'état occurred the following year, the flag of the Seychelles Peoples United Party became the national flag. The current flag of the Republic of Seychelles was officially adopted on June 18, 1996. It consists of oblique bands symbolising a dynamic new nation moving forward into the future. The color blue depicts the sky and the sea, yellow is the sun radiating light and life red is the people’s determination to build a future in unity and love, white is social justice and harmony, with green representing the land and natural environment.
