Black, red and gold in three equal horizontal stripes are the colors of the flag of the Federal Republic of German. or Deutschland. The colors date to the Emperors of the Middle Ages. They were first used unofficially in war against Napoleon when a corps of army volunteers representing all German principalities, adopted black uniforms with red braid and gold buttons. Later student organizations, lobbying for the unification of Germany, used the tri-colors on their banners. Leaders of the 1848 Revolution to create a democratic and unified Germany again used the tri-color and later adopted it in the National Assembly or Frankfurt Parliament. It wasn't until1918 when the German National Assembly of the democratic Weimar Republic adopted it officially as the Deutsch or German flag. Adolph Hitler again abolished the German tricolor in 1933 after gaining power. In 1950, the flag was reintroduced by the German Parliament as the official symbol for the Federal Republic of Germany or West Germany. The tricolor remains the official flag of Deutschland or Germany after the reunification of the Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany) with that of the Federal Republic. Flags Measures 36 in x 60 in and are 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
