The Republic of Nauru, is an island nation in the Micronesian South Pacific. The nearest neighbour is Banaba Island in the Republic of Kiribati, 300 km due east. Nauru is the world's smallest island nation, covering just 21 km² the smallest independent republic, and the only republican state in the world withoutan official capital. It is the United Nations’s least populated member. Initially inhabited by Micronesians and Polynesians, Nauru was annexed by Germany and established as a colony in the late 19th century. The defeat of Germany in World War I, resulted in the creation of a mandate terriitory administered by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Japanese occupation during World War II resulted in a short interuption in this trusteeship until after the war. Nauru achieved independence in 1968. The flag of Nauru was raised for the first time following independence. The blue field is representative of the surrounding Pacific Ocean, and the clear blue sky. The bold yellow line is symbolic of the Equator and the geographic relationship the island have to it. The white star is symbolic of the 12 tribes of Nauru. ?
