The flag of the Republic of Namibia was adopted on March 21, 1990. It consists of a wide red diagonal stripe with white fimbriations dividing the flag from lower hoist to upper fly. The left or upper hoist-side triangle is blue with a yellow, 12-rayed sunburst centered in the triangle. The right or lower fly-side triangle is green. The main colours were taken from the flag of the South West African People’s Organization who lead the national liberation movement. Independence from South Africa was achieved on the above date.
