The Republic of Mauritius aka le République de Maurice, is an island nation located off the coast of the African coast in the southwest Indian Ocean. In addition to the island of Mauritius, the republic includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands. The flag of Mauritius was adopted upon independence, March 12, 1968. It consists of four equidistant horizontal stripes, coloured red, blue, yellow, and green. The colour red symbolises the struggle for independence, blue the island’s host Indian Ocean, yelow, the light of independence shining over the islands and green the lush and fertile opportunitiy of the islands. The flag was recorded at the College of Arms in London on 9 January 1968.
