Maldives Flag - Republic of
SKU: MDV35P

The flag of the Maldives began as a plain red field, with a band of black and white stripes in the hoist added much later. Prime Minister Amir Abdul Majid Didi amended the flag in the 1920’s to include a green panel and a white crescent with its horns facing the hoist.

Independence from of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1949 resulted in the creation of a separate administrative entity. A Republic was established from 1953 until 1954 whereby the crescent was reversed to face the fly and the Government service flag became the national flag. In 1954, the Sultan was reinstated with no changes to the flags to follow until independence from Great Britain in 1965. Three years after independence, the Sultanate was again declared a republic.

The flag of the Republic of Maldives is a red field framing a large green rectangle in the center bearing a vertical white crescent facing away from the hoist. It was officially adopted on July 25, 1965 upon independence from Britain. The red rectangle represents the nation's bold heroes, and their willingness to sacrifice their blood in defense of their country. The green rectangle represents the many coconut palms on the islands. The white crescent moon symbolises a unified Islamic faith.
