Kiribati Flag - Republic of

The Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. It consists of 32 atolls and one raised coral island dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometers. Kiribati straddles the both the equator and the International Date Line. In anticipation of independence from Great Britain, a competition was held to seek a new coat of arms and national flag. A design was submitted and chosen which resembled the colonial coat of arms. The design was submitted to the College of Arms who modified it in both scale and design. Local Kiribati citizens were not happy. They insisted that the originally submitted design be adoped. The the will of the people prevailed. The arms originally date back to a royal warrant issued to the former colony of Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1937. The Ellice Islands subsequently left and became Tuvalu with the Gilbert Island changing their name to Kiribati, The former shield remains a symbol of Kiribati. It is red with white and blue waves representing the ocean, a golden sun rising from it, and above it a bird flying. The new flag was raised on Independence Day in the capital Tarawa, on 12 July 1979.
