The flag of the Republic of Kenya was adopted on 12 December 1963. It is based on the design of the Kenya African National Union flag, the local political party who led the fight for freedom and independence. ? The national flag is a black-red-green tricolor with white fimbriations and over which is imposed a Masai shield and two white spears. The shield is red with black flanks with a white disk in the middle and four white charges. The color black symbolises the nation’s black majority, red represents the struggle for freedom and the resulting bloodshed, green Kenya's agriculture and natural wealth, and the white fimbriations symbolise peace. The traditional Masai shield and two spears symbolises the defense of all of the above.
