Guyana Flag - Cooperative Republic of SKU: GUY35P
The Co-operative Republic of Guyana, which was previously known as British Guyana, is the only former British colony and current member of the Commonwealth of Nations on the mainland of South America. Guyana is the third-smallest country on the mainland of South America, and is one of four non-Spanish-speaking former territories on the continent, along with Brazil, Suriname and the French Department of (French) Guiana. The flag of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana is known as the Golden Arrowhead. It was adopted in 1966 based on a design by Whitney Smith, a prominent American vexillologist. Ms Smith’s design was amended by the British College of Arms to include black and white fimbriations. The flag begins with a green field, with a red isosceles triangle pointing away from the hoist and outlined by a black fimbriation superimposed on a longer yellow arrowhead outlined by a white fimbriation. Symbolic colours include green for agriculture and forestry, white for water and the mighty rivers, gold for mineral wealth, black for endurance, and red for the nation’s zeal and dynamism.
