Grenada Flag
SKU: GRD35P

Grenada is popularly known as “The Spice Isle” because of an abundance of locally grown spices and a culture of music, dance and food reflective of the “spice of life”. Christopher Columbus discovered Granada in the name of Spain in 1498. Initially named Conception Island, it was captured by Cardinal Richelieu and the French in 1650.The colony was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1763 as a result of the Treaty of Paris who made it a Crown Colony in 1877.

The national flag of Grenada was adopted upon independence from Great Britain on February 7, 1974. The six stars in the red border stand for the six parishes, which make up the country, with the middle star, encircled by a red disk, to symbolise the capital, Saint George’s. Centred in the fly is a clove of nutmeg, a principal agricultural crop of Island nation. Hence the nickname “Spice Isle” is closely identified to Grenada’s flag. The red, gold and green colouration of the flag symbolises the nation’s African heritage.
