Belize Flag SKU: BLZ35P
The national flag of Belize was adopted on September 21, 1981 upon independence from the United Kingdom. Designed in 1950 as a symbol of the independence movement it flew unofficially in the former colonly of British Honduras as early as 1968. It is a royal blue field, with the National Coat of Arms centered against a white disk surrounded by 50 mahogany leaves. The coat of arms displays woodworking tools symbolic of the forest industry which attracted the initial Britsh settlements. Below the coat of arms, the national motto “Sub Umbra Floreo” translated to “I Flourish in the Shade” was added. The flag is bordered at top and bottom by two red stripes. The Union Flag was permanently removed from the canton. The colours are derived from both the colours of the People’s United Party and the United Democratic Party of Belize. The UDP was formed in 1973, many years after the flag’s design. It insisted on the addition of the two red stripes to note the opposition party’s presence since blue was the government party colour. The 50 leaves recall 1950, the year PUP came to power. The flag of Belize is unique in that it contains twelve colors, three more than on any other national flag.
