Vanuatu Flag, Republic of SKU: VUT35P
The flag of the Republic of Vanuatu was adopted on February 13, 1980 upon independence from both the United Kingdom and France who had jointly administered the former condominium colony of New Hebrides since the 1880’s. The flag reflects the colours of the Vanua’aku Party who led the campaign for independence. Their corporate colours of red, green, black and yellow formed the basis for the new national flag. A parliamentary committee chose the final design based on submissions from local artists with the winner being Malon Kalontas a school student. The Vanuatu flag begins with Y shape dividing the fly horizontally. It represents the Vanuatu chain of islands, which are also formed in the shape of an Y. It also symbolises the light of the Christ radiating over and between the individual Pacific Ocean islands. Kalontas chose Black to represent the Melanesian people native to the islands. Green symbolises agriculture, which is the core of Vanuatu’s economy. Red represents unity through blood and the many who died for the dream of independence. Yellow is the Christian community, which represents 90% of the population. At the request of the Prime Minister, a black fimbriation was added to the Y to accentuate the colour yellow. The Vanuatu Emblem is centered in the left of the fly against the black background. It consists of a boar’s tusk and leaf namele, and is believed to symbolise Prosperity and Peace respectively.
