Somalia Flag
SKU: SOM35P

The flag of the Somalia Republic was adopted on October 12, 1954. It had been designed by Mohammed Awale Liban as a symbol for the organization Pan-Somali who dreamed of a unified Somalia people. The reunification of the former British and Italian Somaliland, resulted in the flag’s adoption as the new flag of the Somali Democratic Republic. The former British colony would in 1991 declare itself independent from the union. Somalia would then change its name to the Somali Republic.

Somalia flag known in heraldic terms as Azure, a mullet Argent, was designed to resemble the blue United Nations flag. The UN assisted Somalia gain its independence from Italy, so Liban wanted to recognize that in the colour of the new Somalia flag. The five points of the flag’s white star symbolize the five colonies into which the Somalia people where divided by European colonists. These include the former British Somaliland, (now Somaliland), Italian Somaliland (now Somalia), French Somaliland (Now Dijibouti), Ogaden (Now Ethiopia) and Northern Frontier District (now Kenya).

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
