Gibraltar Flag - Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom SKU: GIB35P
The Flag of British Overseas territory of Gibraltar is based on the Coat of Arms of Gibraltar as granted by a Royal warrant Queen Isabella of Castile in July of 1502. The warrant described the arms as “An escutcheon on which the upper two thirds shall be a white field and on the said field set a red castle, and below the said castle, on the other third of the escutcheon, which must be a red field in which there must be a white line between the castle and the said red field, there shall be a golden key which hangs by a chain from the said castle, as are here figured.” In 1982, the arms were regularised in a flag consisting of two horizontal bands of white and red with a three-towered red castle in the centre of the white band. Hanging from the castle gate is a gold key centered in the red band. The castle symbolises the fortress of Gibraltar even though there is no building in the territory resembling the design.
Unlike other British colonies, the flag does not incorporate an ensign or Union Flag into its design. It is
flown throughout Gibraltar, often beside the Union Jack. It is a symbol of Gibraltarian nationalism, and is very popular among its residents. The fate of Gibraltar rests with its residents. A three hundred year dispute as to the ownership of the Rock has kept a sense of friction alive between the Royal households of Spain and their cousins in the United Kingdom. The Gibraltarian design separate from the better known British designs has allowed civility along the border with Spain and yet allowed Britain to control access to the Mediterranean.
