Brazil Flag - Federative Republic of
SKU: BRA35P

The flag of the Federative Republic of Brazil was inspired by the flag of the former Brazilian Empire, which was known as the Imperial flag. It was green representing the Imperial House of Braganza of Pedro 1 who was Brazil’s first Emperor. Likewise, yellow represented the Habsburg Imperial Family of Empress Leopoldina his wife, Suitably; the centre of the imperial flag bore the Imperial Coat of Arms

The modern republican flag has replaced the coat of arms with a blue circle, depicting the morning sky of Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889 the day the Republic of Brazil was declared. It is displayed from outside of the celestial sphere. The stars, each represent one of the union's member-states. The number of stars varies with the creation of each new state. Originally 21 stars, the current flag displays 27 representing 26 states one known as Sigma Octantis representing the Federal District. Sigma Octantis, whose position is near the south celestial pole, is visible year-round and across the entire country. Given its polar position, all the other stars appear to rotate around it.

The motto Ordem e Progresso (Order and Progress) is inspired by Auguste Comte's motto of positivism: L’amour pour principe et l’ordre pour base; le progrès pour but (Love as a principle and order as the basis; progress as the goal). It was placed on the flag to commemorate those involved in the republican coup d’etat who subscribed to the philosophies of Comte.
