The flag of the Republic of Tunisia was officially adopted during the rein of Al-Husayn I ibn Ali I, the eighth Bey of the Hasainid Dynasty. He was the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the son of Imam Ali, the first Imam. He is revered by most Shi’a Muslims as the third Imam, and as the second Imam by most Ismaili Shi'a Muslims The Husainid's originally ruled under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1881 Tunisia came under French control as a protectorate under the flag of France. Upon independence from France on March 20, 1956 the Bey, Muhammad VIII al Amin ascended the throne. His rein lasted until being deposed by his Prime Minister Habib Bourguiba upon the declaration of Republic status on July 25, 1957. The Tunisian flag flown during the Ottoman era was reintroduced after the departure of the French. It remains today.

The Tunisian flag, known as the National emblem of the Republic of Tunisia is red and consists of a red field with a white circle centered in the flag. Within the circle rests a five-pointed red star surrounded by a red crescent. The design and colour represent both the Muslim faith and the nations Ottoman traditions.
