Georgia Flag SKU: GEO35P
The original flag of the Georgian Republic was the St George’s Cross design of a single red cross on a white field. This was at the request of Georgian King Vakhtang Gorgasali during the 5th century as a symbol of the Georgian State and nation. The central element of the flag is St. George's cross. By coincidence, Georgia shares the use of this flag and its patron Saint George, with England. Legend states that the four extra crosses were added during the reign of George V of Georgia who was also known as George the Brilliant or Splendid for driving the Mongols out of Georgia. Around the time of the flag’s adoption, legend states it was a variant of the Jerusalem cross, symbolizing the crusades in the Holy Land, which likewise used a large central cross with four smaller "crosslets" in the each quadrant. The crosses are said to have represented the five Holy Wounds of Christ. The Saint Georges Cross design disappeared during the medieval period and remained dormant until revived by patriotic Georgians in 1991 upon the withdrawal of the Soviet Union. A majority of Georgians, including the influential Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church called for the restoration of the flag. In 1999, the Georgian parliament passed a bill to change the flag only to have it vetoed by then Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. After much debate, the flag was finally adopted by the Georgian parliament in January 2004 and formally endorsed by a presidential decree signed by the newly elected President of Georgia two weeks later.
