Montenegro Flag - Republic of SKU: MNE35P
The Republic of Montenegro, a former Serbian principality rose out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire and the once great Yugoslavia. The breakup of the former socialist Yugoslavia resulted in a union of Serbia and Montenegro. Upon receiving 55% support in a state referendum, independence was declared on June 3, 2006. Membership in the United Nations followed on June 28th, 2006. The Flag of Montenegro was officially adopted upon the inauguration of a new Constitution on October 22, 2007. It was previously adopted by parliament in 2004, following its unofficial use by the Montenegrin people during the former Serbia and Montenegro union. The flag of Montenegro consists of a red banner trimmed in gold, and the Montenegrin Coat of Arms centered in the field. The arms date back to the Crnojevi? dynasty, whereby the Montenegrin state coat of arms consisted of a double-headed golden eagle. This design was later incorporated into the arms of the Petrovi? dynasty by Petar ll Petrovic Njegoš. It would be amended again by Prince Danilo Petrovi? Njegoš, who crowned the eagle and added a scepter in one claw and the orb in the other. The eagle’s breast shield now bore a golden lion passant upon green grass and under a blue sky. Prince Nikola I Petar Njegoš added his initials NI to recognize his imperial status. This design disappeared with the incorporation of Montenegro into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and its subsequent soviet republic. At the will of the Montenegrin people, the heritage design was returned to the flag upon independence.
