The Union of Burma is also known in world communities as the Union of Myanmar. The name change results from a military coup d’etat in 1989. Although the name change is recognized by some national governments and not by others, it has never adopted by Burmese legislators. The State Flag of the Union of Burma a red field with a dark blue canton in the top left corner. A pinion and ears of paddy encircled by fourteen white stars of equal size have been superimposed and centred on the canton. The pinion consists of fourteen equi-sized cogs and the two ears of paddy consist of 34 grains. At the top of each cog is a star with five vertices. The paddy symbolises the peasants while the pinion stands for the workers who are the majority of the population. Fourteen uniform white stars represent the equal status and unity of the 7 States and 7 Divisions that constitute the Union of Myanmar. Red signifies courage and decisiveness, white represents virtue and purity and blue peace and integrity.
