Newfoundland and Labrador is the oldest European settled area in North America first settled by the Vikings and later rediscovered by Sir John Cabot in 1497 on behalf of Great Britain's King Henry VII. For several generations Newfoundland flew the British Union Jack as a British Colony, an independent Crown Dominion and as a Province of Canada. Newfoundland joined together with Labrador to become Canada's 10th province in 1949. On May 28th, 1990 Newfoundlanders officially adopted a new flag for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The new official flag of was first flown on June 24, 1980 after being designed by a local artist. On the flag, the blue symbolizes the sea, white snow and ice, red human effort and gold Newfoundlanders confidence in themselves The blue triangle is similar to the former Union Jack in that it is symbolic of Newfoundland's Commonwealth heritage Red triangles represent the provinces island and mainland portions. The gold arrow points towards optimism for a bright future. When hung as a banner, the arrow represents a sword and reminds Newfoundlanders of the sacrifices made by their war veterans. The white centre incorporates the Christian cross, Beothuk and Naskapi ornamentation, and an outline of the Canadian Maple Leaf. The trident is symbolic of the Province's connection to the sea and fishing.
