Prince Edward Island was the seventh British Colony to join Confederation and it remains Canada's smallest province. Jacques Cartier discovered the Island in 1534. In 1799 the area known as St. John's Island was renamed Prince Edward Island and became a separate British Colony with its own official seal. In 1864 the Colony's capital Charlottetown, hosted a meeting of the Fathers of Confederation upon which Canada was founded three years later. Not ready to join itself, the Colony waited until July 1, 1873 before joining Canadian Confederation.
On March 24, 1964, to commemorate the Centennial of the Charlottetown Conference, the Province's Legislature voted to incorporate its Coat of Arms granted in 1905 into a provincial flag. The flag was bordered on the three sides away from the mast by alternative bands of red and white. The upper section of the shield featured the English heraldic lion that appeared both on the Coat of Arms of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, for whom the province is named, and on that of King Edward VII himself. The lower section shows a large oak tree on the right and three young saplings on the left. The mature tree was originally intended to represent England sheltering and protecting her Colonies, while the three saplings stand for the three counties into which the province was divided in 1767. All rise from the same foundation, as both Britain and the Province are islands. Flag Measures 4 in x 6 in and is 100% polyester. Plastic spear handle.
