The flag of Moldova is a tricolor design consisting of vertical blue, yellow and red stripes with the national coat of arms imposed in the centre. It is similar in design to the Romanian flag and represents Moldova's shared heritage with Romania. The coat of arms consists of the eagle of Walachia holding an Orthodox Christian cross in its beak and an olive branch in one talon, with the scepter of Michael the Brave of Walachia in the other. Walachia is a historic region of Eastern Europe.

The Moldavian flag was adopted on May 12, 1990, preceding its independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991. Prior to Soviet occupation, Moldova had been occupied by Romania. Upon an ultimatum from the Moscow, the nation was ceded to the Soviets by the Romanian government. The Romanian style flag, which is shared by Moldova was inspired by the French tricolor during the Romanian revolution of 1848 against the ruling nobility.
