Legends state that the Republic of San Marino is the worlds oldest constitutional republic dating back to the year 301 when it was founded by Marinus of Rab. Saint Marinus was a stone mason and Christian who fled religious persecution at the hands of Diocletian, the Roman Emperor. San Marino is a land-locked state located in and surrounded by northeast Italy. It ranks as the world’s third smallest nation after the Holy See and Monaco. The flag of San Marino was officially adopted on April 6, 1862 and is one of the world’s oldest flags. It consists of two equal horizontal stripes of white and blue. The Sammarinese coat of arms is superimposed in the field. The upper white stripe symbolizes the snow-capped mountains of which Mount Titano, bears the highest peak. The blue stripe represents the sky. The arms consist of a shield flanked by a wreath under a crown. Below, a scroll bears the motto LIBERTAS. The civil flag omits the coat of arms. The Sammarinese Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
