Albania Flag, Republic of SKU: ALB35P
The national flag of Albania is a red field with a black two-headed eagle in the centre. Legend states that it is derived from the similar seal of Giergi Kastriot Skanderberg, an Albanian who led the revolt against the Ottoman Empire resulting in brief independence for regions of Albania from 1443 to 1478. The current flag was officially adopted on April 7th, 1992, but had been flown in similar versions by the former Kingdom of Albania and the post war communist state. Its origins date back to November 28, 1912 when the National Assembly of Viora proclaimed Albanian independence and in doing so approved the design as the Albanian symbol.
The Albanian flag is a symbol of the ethnic discord experienced within the nation. When the government of Muslim Albania was established in 1914, the National Eldery of Durres approved the Esat Pasha as the national symbol. This did not meet well with the Muslim Albanians who preferred to use the Ottoman flag as their symbol and tie to the past. Examining the flag, the horizontal open-winged eagle symbolizes the lack of submission of the highland Albanians to foreign conquest. When annexed by Soviet influences in the post World War II era, the communists added a yellow five-pointed star to the flag. This was immediately removed in 1992 when the first multi-party parliament met in 1992 upon the withdrawl of the Communists. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
