Acadiana-Cajun Flag (Louisiana) SKU: ACL35P
When the French arrived at the St. Lawrence River in 1604 they named the area south of the Gulf of St Lawrence Acadia. Original settlements extended from Cape Sable Island in Nova Scotia to the Petitcodiac River Basin in New Brunswick. They developed their own culture and no longer considered themselves purely French. The final struggle for North America began in 1754 with English in control of Acadia. The Acadians were French and Roman Catholic. The British fearing that the Church would persuade the Acadians and Micmac to enter the war against them required the Acadians to swear an Oath of Allegiance to the King or face deportation. With the conclusion of hostilities in 1763, Acadians were free to return home but not permitted to settle in large groups. Acadian lands were now occupied by the English forcing Acadians to relocate to remote coastal regions of the province. Many Acadians were assimilated into the French-Canadian culture After generations of inter-marriage with other nationalities, there are still a large populations who consider themselves Acadian. The largest populations are found in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and in Louisiana. Those who settled in the Acadiana region of Louisiana, are often referred to as Cajuns reflecting the Spanish influence that met them upon their arrival. In 1974 the Louisiana State legislature officially adopted an Acadiana flag. The three silver fleurs-de-lis on the blue field represent the French heritage of Acadiana. The gold star on the white field symbolizes Our Lady of the Assumption, Patron Saint of the Acadians. In the American tradition, the star also symbolises Cajun participation in the American Revolution as soldiers fighting under the direction of the Spanish governor of Louisiana. The gold tower situated on the red field symbolizes Spain who governed Louisiana upon their arrival. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
