Bavaria Flag, Free State of (Freistaat Bayern) SKU: DBV35P
The flag of the Free State of Bavaria or Freistaat Bayern is the largest and southernmost state in Germany. Its capital is the historic city of Munich, the home of Germany’s famed Oktoberfest. The Bavarian Flag consists of a series of lozenges (fusils) in a repeating pattern of blue and white. Bavarian law states that the flag must contain a minimum of 21 lozenges, including any incomplete ones. This means that versions of the flag with more lozenges are correct. The incomplete lozenge in the upper corner must be a white. Centered can be the state coat of arms. The symbols depicted in the coat of arms are deeply entrenched in the history of Bavaria. The heraldic elements of the Great Bavarian Coat of Arms have the following meaning: The rampant lion in it armor rouge et or standing on a black field originally symbolized the Counts Palatine on the Rhine. Today it represents the administrative region of Upper Palatinate. The field of red divided by three white spires emerged in 1350 on the Arms of the Bishopric of Würzburg and the Prince Bishops. Today they denote the three governmental districts of Upper, Middle and Lower Franconia.Three black lions with red talons stand on golden ground one above the other, with heads askance. Originating on the Arms of the house of Hohenstaufen, the former Dukes of Swabia, it now symbolizes the region of Swabia. The bottom left field displays a blue panther rampant, with gold talons, on a white ground. Originally appearing on the arms of the Counts Palatine of Ortenburg, it was subsequently adopted by the Wittelsbachs. Today it represents the regions of the Lower and Upper Bavaria. The heart-shaped shield of white and blue fusils askance originated as the coat of arms of the Counts of Bogen. In 1247 the Wittelsbachs adopted it. The white-and-blue fusils symbolise Bavaria as a whole. The four coat fields with the heart-shaped shield in the centre are crowned with a golden band with precious stones decorated with five ornamental leaves. This people’s crown was added in 1923 to symbolize a sovereign people no longer subject to a royal crown.
