The blue, white and red horizontal design of the Costa Rican flag was conceived in 1848, to mark Costa Rica’s departure from the Federal Republic of Central America, declaring a Sovereign Republic. The Costa Rican flag was designed by Pacífica Fernández, wife of president José María Castro Madriz, who was inspired by the colours of the French Tricolore. The national coat of arms is included on the state flag and is located to the left of centre.

The official colours are defined as follows:

  • Blue representing the sky, opportunities, idealism and perseverance,
  • White representing peace, wisdom and happiness, and, ,
  • Red representing the blood spilled by martyrs for independence as well as the generosity of the people.

    The flag of Costa Rica was officially adopted on November 27, 1906.
