Singapore Flag - Republic of SKU: SGP35P
For over 140 years (1819-1959), the Union Flag flew over Singapore. This ended on December 3, 1959, when Yang di-Pertuan Negara was installed as the new Head of State and Singapore was granted self-government under the British crown. To commemorate this day, a new flag, state crest and national anthem were unveiled. The new flag was designed under the direction of then Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Toh Chin Chye.
The flag was designed to represent the constituent populations of Singapore. Red was chosen to symbolise good fortune for the Chinese and courage for the Malays. White was the traditional Malay and universal colour of purity. When the Malays requested the inclusion of a crescent moon to represent Islam, the government compromised with 5 stars and a moon instead. The moon represents a young nation and the 5 stars democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality in no specific order. The stars bear no similarity in meaning to the Chinese flag, which also displays 4 stars.
