Panama Flag - Republic of SKU: PAN35P
The Flag of the Republic of Panama consists of a divided rectangle of four quadrants. The upper field on the hoist side is a white field with a blue star of five points; the upper field on the fly side is red; the lower field on the hoist side is blue; and the lower field on the fly is white also with a red star of five points. The flag reflects the political climate at the time of its adoption. The colour blue symbolized the nation’s Conservative Party, the colour red symbolized the Liberal Party, and the White represented their peaceful existence. The blue star stands for purity and honesty of life while the red star symbolizes authority and law. Together they represent the new republic.
The Panamanian flag was conceived by Mr. Amador Guerrero on October 29th, 1903 and sewn by his wife Maria Ossa de Amador on November 2nd. The flag was solemnly baptised on December 20th, 1903, with Reverend Father Fray Bernardino de la Concepción Garcia conferring the blessing. Dr. Gerardo Ortega with Ms. Lastenia de Lewis and Mr. José Agustín Arango with Ms. Manuela M. de Arosemena observed the ceremony as the flag’s Godparents. It was hoisted for the first time immediately afterwards. The Constituent Assembly provisionally approved the flag by Law 64 of 1904. It was definitively approved through Law 4 of 1925 written by the National Assembly and ratified by Law 28 on March 28th 1941. Panama's flag is celebrated annually on November 4th, one day after Panamanian independence from Colombia.
