International Buddhist Flag
SKU: BUD35P

The International Buddhist Flag was adopted for use by the World Fellowship of Buddhists at their meeting in Colombo Sri Lanka in mid 1950. The concept of a Buddhist flag had first appeared in 1880 as a creation of the Colombo Buddhist Committee who sought a symbol of faith and peace for the Buddhist community. It was hoisted for the first time on April 28,1885 (Vesak Day) at the Dipaduttamaramaya temple in Colombo for temple call.

The six colors of the flag, and the mixture thereof represent the colors of the aura emanating from the body of the Buddha upon attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree.

Blue from the Buddha's hair symbolising Universal Compassion for all beings.

Yellow from the Buddha's epidermis symbolising compromise and the avoidance of all extremes in favour of balance and liberation.

Red from the Buddha's flesh symbolising the blessings that the Buddha's teachings promise.

White from the Buddha's bones and teeth symbolising the purity of the Buddha's Teaching and the liberation it brings.

Orange from the Buddha's palms, heels and lips symbolising the unshakable Wisdom of the Buddha's Teachings.

Combined symbolising the universality of the Truth of the Buddha's Teaching.

The horizontal stripes signify peace and harmony amongst all races of the world while the vertical stripes represent eternal peace within the world.

The basic message contained within the Buddhist Flag is that regardless of race, nationality, division or skin color, every living being possesses the Nature of Buddha and the potential to attain Buddhahood.
