The Canadian Red Ensign is the former de facto national flag of the Dominion of Canada. In 1892, it was declared to be the official flag of Canadian merchant ships and sea-bearing vessels. Despite its lack of official status the Red Ensign was seen as a Canadian Flag widely gaining acceptance as an alternate to the British Union Jack Flag. In 1924, the Parliament of Canada approved the Canadian Red Ensign for official use outside of Canadian government buildings abroad. This was expanded in 1945 to include domestic Government offices. The Canadian Red Ensign lead Canada's troops to war and the Battle of Vimy Ridge establishing a Canadian identity overseas. The flag returned to active duty in the 2nd Great War again assisting our troops to Victory. The Canadian Red Ensign served until it was replaced in 1965 by the Canadian Maple Leaf. During its unofficial and official fly as Canada'sflag, it bore several variations of the shield from the Canadian Coat of Arms.As each new province joined Confederation the Canadian Shield was revised to reflect the additions. In 1957, the flag returned to use of the original shield bearing the four founding provinces.
