Canadian Forces Air Command Ensign
SKU: CFA35P

The Canadian Forces Air Command ensign is rooted firmly in Canada's past. Born as the Royal Expedition Force it later became known as His Majesty's Royal Air Force. After briefly accompanying the Royal Air Force in 1918, it was disbanded at War's end.

In 1921, the Canadian Air Force was reborn. The newly recruited airmen saluted a new royal blue ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and a roundel bearing a stylish red maple leaf. This was to clearly distinguish His Majesty's Canadian air force from his British one. On August 15th, 1940 Canada went to war in defense of King and Country. At the end of the war the RCAF was the world's 4th largest air force.

In 1968, Canada merged its air force, navy and army into the Canadian Forces. Born in this merger was the Canadian Forces Air Command, an operating unit which was responsible for air defense, but also stripped of its royal symbols and proud past. When the Department of National Defense declared the RCAF ensign redundant, an organization known as the RCAF Association petitioned for and was granted exclusive use of the former ensign by Royal degree and subsequent trademark.

In the 1980's DND began to allow the reintroduction of service-specific uniforms and colours for its component command units. A Canadian Forces Air Command ensign soon followed, modelled after its predeceasor with two major changes. The Canadian Maple Leaf as Canada's National flag now adorns the canton and the maple leaf in the roundel also reflects the design of our National flag. We can't return to the glory days of the RCAF, but we can show our support for the men and women of the Canadian Forces Air Command
