Monaco Flag - Principality of SKU: MCO35P
The national flag of the Principality of Monaco has two equal horizontal bands of red (top) and white. It is often confused with the flag of Indonesia which is similar in design, but longer and with the flag of Poland which is reversed top to bottom. Red and white were established in 1339 as the heraldic colours of the ruling House of Gimaldi.
Originally, the national flag of Monaco known also as the state flag, incorporated the Gimaldi coat of arms in to its design. The flag consisted of the two bands as noted above but also displayed the Prince's coat of arms centred at the hoist. This design flew proudly in the Principality from 1339 through April 4, 1881 except for a 21 year period of annexation by France from 1793 to 1814 when of course the French Tricolore was flown.
On April 4, 1881, the arms were removed from the Monegasque flag leaving it a simple red and white design which would be then known as the national flag of Monaco. The Coat of Arms where placed on a white background constituting a new state flag which would be reserved for use by the ruling member of the Gimaldi family the Sovereign Prince of Monaco.
