Luxembourg Flag - Grand Duchy of
SKU: LUX35P

At the Congress of Vienna in late 1814 and early 1815, a new Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed under the authority of King William I a member of the House of Orange-Nassau. The King received Luxembourg in compensation for the loss of the Nassau lands in Germany. It became the 18th province of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, a member of the German Federation and a Grand Duchy.

In 1830, Luxembourg joined neigbourhing opposition to the economic domination of their Dutch King in the non Dutch-speaking provinces. Roman Catholic populations in these areas were also hostile to their King's calvanist faith. Known as the Belgian Revolt, it ended with the division of the the Dutchy whereby the provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders, Brabant, Antwerp, Hainaut, Namur and Liege, as well as half of Limburg and Luxembourg would become the new nation of Belgium. The balance of Luxembourg remained under Dutch control but no longer members of the Germann Confederation. The King of the Netherlands remained as the Grand Duke of Luxembourg in personal union between the two countries until the death of William III in 1890. When the King died without a male heir, Luxembourg passed to Adolph of Nassau-Weilburg severing all ties to the Netherlands.

The flag of Luxembourg is a horizontal tricolore consisting of stripes of red white and blue. It first appeared in 1830 during the Belgian revolt likely from the the shield of the rebelling Province of Limbourg whose flag bore sliver and blue stripes. The design of the Luxmbourg tricolore was fixed on June 12, 1945 following liberation by the Allied Forces. It was officially adopted by Parliament and Grand Duke Henri on June 23, 1972 together with regulations prescribing an ensign and roundel for use in Luxembourg. The heraldic law defined the shade of blue as per fess Gules and Azure, a fess Argent. This was to ensure distinction from the flag of the Netherlands another tricolore red white and blue. Recent discussion in Luxembourg as to whether or not to change the flag's design to provide more distinction have stalled. The latest proposal to incorporate a red lion on to the flag was criticised as it would then cause confusion with the Belgian province of Luxembourg flag.
