Hungary Flag - Republic of
SKU: HUN35P

The current Hungarian flag originated in 1848 as a symbol of the freedom movement and revolution against the Habsburgs and the monarchy. Republican sentiments resulted in the flag being compared to the French tricolour another symbol of revolution. The Red White and Green were taken from the coat of arms of the Arpads, the founding dynasty who ruled Hungary in the 13th and 14th centuries.

When the revolution was defeated, the Austrian Emperor quickly banned the flag. The Compromise of 1867 reulted in the adoption of the flag as the legal colours of Hungary. It now included a badge consisting of the minor arms of Hungary with archeangels as supporters. This lasted until the end of the Habsburg Empire in 1918.

The 1919 Hungarian Soviet Republic, whose life was less than 100 days flirted with the a red soviet banner. The period between 1920 and the end of World War II again flew the tricolore flag with the minor arms of Hungary but now minus the supporters. The crown was removed during the period 1946 athru 1949 only to be followed with a new Stalinist style Hungarian badge.

During the anti-Soviet uprising of 1956, the Stalinist emblem was cut out of the flag, the resulting hole a symbol of protest. Local authorities attempted to restore the badge bearing minor arms but minus the crown. When the Red Army put down the the revolt, they ordered the creation of a new more Soviet style coat of arms. The new Arms never adorned the flag. Since 1957, Hungary has flown a tricolore red white and green flag void of any badge shield or insignia.

Folklore of the romantic period attributed the colours to virtues: red for strength, white for faithfulness and green for hope. Or alternately red for the blood spilled for the fatherland, white for freedom and green for the land, for the pastures of Hungary.
