South Africa Flag - Republic of
SKU: ZAF35P

The current design of the National Flag of the Republic of South Africa was adopted on 27 April 1994, the end of apartheid. As the white-only government was falling apart, many South Africans called for a more inclusive, less racist flag. After a competition whereby none of the flag designs submitted by the public were supported by the committee charged to select the final design an interim flag was designed by the State Herald, Frederick Brownell. It was his intention to have the flag ready for the the nation's first fully-inclusive election on April 27th and for Nelson Mandela's expected May 10 inauguration. The flag was so well received as an interim version, the decision was made to finalize it in the South African Constitution in anticipation of the election.

The flag consists of; two equal width horizontal bands of red (top) and blue separated by a central green band which splits into a horizontal Y, the arms of which end at the hoist corners. The Y embraces a black isosceles triangle from which the arms are separated by narrow yellow bands; the red and blue bands are separated from the green band and its arms by narrow white stripes. . The South African flag is the only six-coloured national flag in the world without a seal or brocade. Red for bloodshed Blue of open skies; Green for the land; Black for the African people; White for the European people; Yellow for natural resources and; The Y symbolizes the merging unity.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
