Slovenia Flag - Republic of SKU: SVN35P
Slovenia’s national flag features three equal horizontal bands of white (top), blue, and red known commonly as Pan-Slavic colours, with the Slovenian coat of arms located in the upper hoist side of the flag centered within the white and blue bands. The order of display copies the Russian flag. The Slovenian coat of arms is a shield bearing the image of Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak represented in white against a blue sky. Beneath are two wavy blue lines representing the Adriatic Sea and local rivers. Six-pointed golden stars in an inverted triangle commemorate the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje (Grofje Celjski), who were the great Slovenian dynastic of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The Pan-Slavic colours where considered national colours long before appearing on a national flag. They first appeared in this order in 1848 during the rise of European nationalism known as the Spring of Nations. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918, Slovenians initially formed part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, who soon joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and was later, renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929. Following Nazi occupation during World War II, Slovenia became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, whereby a red and gold Soviet style star was imposed on the country’s flag. Slovenian independence was attained on June 25, 1991 following the defeat of the Yugoslavian Army during the Ten-Day war. Two days later, the star was removed from the flag and replaced with the Slovenian coat of arms.
