Ukraine Flag - Republic of SKU: UKR35P
Article 20 of the Constitution of Ukraine specifies the "National Flag of Ukraine is a banner of two equal-sized horizontal strips colored blue and yellow". It is believed that this design dates back to and influenced by the blue and white banners widely used by Cossacks between the 16th and 18th century and to the Hetman's banners which were similar to the coats of arms of the nobility. Yellow and blue were the colours common on coats of arms in Galicia. In fact, the coat of arms of Lviv to the day remains a golden lion on a blue field.
The current national flag of Ukraine can be traced back to 1848, when during the Spring of the Nations yellow and blue banner flew over the Lviv magistrate for the first time It signaled Ukrainian unrest within the Austrian Empire it was not the start of conflict. In fact, it resulted in newly formed Ukrainian divisions in the Austrian army adopting yellow and blue banners as their insignia.
In order to assist with better explaining the flag's identity, it was changed in 1948 by Ukrainian nationalists. The flag was inverted to reverse the blue which had been on the bottom placing it instead at the top of the flag. The folklore of a "blue sky above yellow field of wheat" was devised to sell the concept of a national identity to the Ukrainian people. This identity continued to flourish during the Austro-Hungarian empire of the late 19th Century but not so much under the Russian Empire which would follow.
The flag of Ukraine was officially adopted in 1918 by a short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic. It was a bicolore blue and yellow stripe sporting a Tryzub or coat of arms in the upper left corner. Under Bolshevik rule, the Ukrainian flag was again revised to look like the Soviet flag with only a band of blue along the bottom distinguishing the two. Only the Ukrainian SSR flag was allowed to be flown. The Ukrainian national flag would remain in peoples hearts until 1990 when it would be raised at Khreshchatyk City Hall next to the state flag of the USSR just one week after the Supreme Council of USSR adopted the Declaration of the State Sovereignty of Ukraine. It was raised at the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) On September 4, 1991 and was officially readopted as the national flag on January 28, 1992.
