Vietnam Flag - Socialist Republic of
SKU: VNM35P

The conquest of Vietnam by France began in 1858 with it officially becoming part of French Indochina in 1887. Independence was declared after World War II, but the French continued to rule until 1954 when they were defeated by Communist forces under Ho Chi MINH, who took control of the North.  The result was a partitioning of the nation. American economic and military intervention was used in the 1960's to attempt to fortify the government in the south, but it was unsuccessful. The US wanting to withdraw from its worst military exercise ever, negotiated a ceasefire agreement in 1973. Within two years of the American withdrawal from South Vietnam, its capital Saigon was overran by North Vietnamese troops.

The flag of Vietnam  known as the "Red Flag with Yellow Star" was designed by Nguy?n H?u Ti?n, a revolutionary in the South Uprising ("Nam K? Kh?i ngh?a") against French colonialization. Legend states that the flag appeared initially as a symbol of this attempted uprising.  When the insurrection failed, Nguy?n H?u Ti?n was arrested and suffered the amputation of his hands at the order of the French Authorities. These were the hands which created the flag.

The Vietnamese flag is red with a yellow pentagram or five-pointed star in the center. It  symbolizes the leadership of the Vietnamese Communist Party. Red represents success and revolution. The five points of the stars represent the workers, the peasants, the soldiers, the intellectuals, and the young.  The flag was adopted on November 30, 1955 as the flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.  The fall of the Republic of Vietnam on 30 April 1975, resulted in the formation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The flag was adopted as the flag of the new unified nation upon its formation.
