Bahamas Flag - Commonwealth of the
SKU: BHS35P

Christopher Columbus's first landing in the New World in 1492 is believed to have been on the island of San Salvador (now Watling's Island), in the southeastern Bahamas. He was greeted by Taino Indians from both northwestern Hispaniola and northeastern Cuba. who had arrived in the 7th century AD and became the Lucayans. There may have been as many as 40,000 Lucayans living in the Bahamas when Columbus arrived. After the Lucayans were destroyed the Bahamian islands were deserted until the arrival of English settlers from Bermuda in 1650. Known as the Eleutherian Adventurers, these people established settlements on the island now called Eleuthera (from the Greek word for freedom).

The Bahamas became a British crown colony in 1718. Many of these British Loyalists were given compensatory land grants in the Bahamas. Some 8,000 loyalists and their slaves arrived in the Bahamas in the late 1700s from US. The Islands served as refuge to HRH the Duke of Windsor who served as the Island's Governor and his wife Wallace Simpson during WWII. The British granted the islands internal self-government in 1964 and full independence in 1973. The islands have chosen to remain a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

The flag of the Bahamas was adopted on July 10, 1973 to commemorate nation status. The black triangle on the left represents the unity of the 300,000 people of The Bahamas, who are primarily of African descent. To the right of the triangle, the blue stripes at the top and bottom of the flag represent the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and the gold stripe in the middle represents the sun and sand between them: the sandy shores of the Bahamian islands.

Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
