Antigua and Barbuda is an island nation located in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the North Atlantic Ocean. It was first inhabited by the Siboney in 2400 B.C., but Arawak and Carib Indians populated the islands when Columbus landed on his second voyage in 1493. Early settlements by the Spanish and French were succeeded by the English who formed a colony in 1667. Slavery, established to run the sugar plantations on Antigua, was abolished in 1834. The islands became an independent from Britain in 1981 but chose to retain Queen Elizabeth as their head of state within the British Commonwealth.
The national flag of Antigua and Barbuda was adopted on February 27, 1967, and was designed by a school teacher named Reginald Samuels. The sun symbolizes the dawning of a new era. The colors have different meanings, the black is for the African ancestry of the people, the blue for hope, the red for energy.
