Ghana Flag - Republic of SKU: GHA35P
The Republic of Ghana is a nation in West Africa. It borders Côte
d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso in the north, Togo to the east, with the Gulf
of Guinea on its southern coastline. Formerly the Gold Coast, the name Ghana is
derived from the Ghana Empire although its territory never reached present-day
Ghana.
The flag of Ghana was adopted in 1957. It was designed by Mrs. Theodosia Okoh
to replace the The British Union Flag upon attainment of independence in 1957.
It consists of the Pan-African colours of Ethiopia, i.e. red, gold and green, in
horizontal stripes with a black five-pointed star in the centre of the gold
stripe. The Ghanaian flag was the first African flag after the Ethiopia to adopt
these colours. A white stripe was used briefly instead of the gold from
1964 to 1966.
The red represents the blood of those who died in the country's struggle for
independence, the gold represents the mineral wealth of the country, the green
symbolises the country's rich forests and natural wealth, and the black star
stands for the lodestar of African freedom. Flag Measures 36 in x 60 in and is 100% polyester with grommets for easy flying.
